Isolated against a nearly white background, the tree’s compact canopy contrasts with the weathered, twisting trunk and exposed deadwood below. The high-key composition removes almost all sense of surrounding space, allowing the bonsai’s intricate structure, texture and sculptural form to become the entire subject.
