Sargeant Juniper Bonsai

Description
A Sargent juniper bonsai photographed at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., on Ilford Delta 400 film with a Yashica 635. The tree’s twisting trunk rises from exposed roots before sweeping outward into carefully defined layers of foliage, its organic asymmetry isolated against a nearly white background. The high-key black-and-white composition emphasizes the bonsai’s sculptural form, intricate branching and balance of strength and delicacy, while the square medium-format frame gives the tree the presence of a formal portrait.
